No other industrial brake on the market can come close to the torque, speed, efficiency and
reliability than that of the DUO-GRIP brake design. With internal and external opposing brake
shoes that clamp to a drum, flat bar or disk, these brakes combine the best attributes of both
disk and drum brakes, but with more torque in a smaller design space than
either.
An ultra fast-actuating spring-applied cylinder drives force to the shoes, multiplied through the
binding action of a simple but strong precision-cast alloy steel lever. In the servo direction of
rotation that binding leverage also causes a self-energizing action to occur that generates more
braking torque, even more than other brake designs that are also self-energizing. This is what
makes these brakes superior in emergency stopping, position holding or anti-backup
applications. The caliper-type gripping between the inner and outer shoes results in no drum
distortion, so more actuating force is converted to braking force and more efficient cooling and
lower rotating inertia are additional benefits.
The brake’s spring cylinder comes pre-lubricated from the factory;
simply supply clean, dry air when the brake is to disengage. As the spring is compressed, it’s potential energy stands
ready to apply near-instantaneous engagement of the brake when the air is released.
Dynamometer testing confirms actuation times averaging 40-60 milliseconds from the initial
signal to dump air pressure to the time the brake develops full torque.
The simple, compact design of DUO-GRIP brakes allows multiple brake units in different
combinations, left or right, to apply braking to the same drum or braking bar. This allows
stacking to multiply directional torque or balance torque in opposite directions of travel. Low
air consumption and long lining life contribute to minimal maintenance requirements. Visual
inspection, simple adjustment and ultra-fast brake shoe replacement make what maintenance
there is, easy.
In the anti-servo direction of rotation, no self energizing means that you get stable,
controllable torque for tension applications by varying the air pressure to the brake.
Efficient cooling, low lining wear and excellent non-energizing torque controllability allows
DUO-GRIP brakes to operate in tension control applications in either spring-applied or air-applied modes.
